I’m in a mood for a rant :)

So, let me see… They say that the Gulf or let’s say the “Middle East” is suffering a financial crisis, yeah? There was no effing evidence of the global financial crisis as tycoons and celebrities streamed into Dubai last night for the world’s most expensive private party.

Having spent £1 billion, the owners of the Atlantis hotel, which they hope will become the new symbol of excess in a region already replete with towering statements of wealth, splashed out £13.5 million on its opening.

Ok, excuse me ladies and toyboys, WHAT THE FUCK?

The fact that Kylie Minogue was paid £1.3m for an hours performance is also ridiculous! How can that be justified? I love Kylie, but she’s not Madonna. What’s the big deal here? A sand castle made next to sea, guess what next? An obscene amount spent on fireworks, when millions of children are sleeping with no food in their tummies. And again, not like I give a shit but that is too much.

I think this resort is a disgrace. Another example of man wanting to dominate nature. Did anyone think about how those fireworks affected their sea life, the fishes and other marine creatures that are forced to be there? When the world is suffering, all they want to do is show off a man made island and an expensive hotel.

…and this was the place that made a moral fuss about two people having sex on a beach…the immoral amounts of money spent on this is in a world in which people often die through hunger is simply disgusting and should highlight what utter nonsense some countries religious morals are.

I think Dubai. Dubai lacks its own identity, Dubai is just like Phoenix for you American readers, There was nothing there 50 years ago and all the sudden the city just pops up. This gives it no heart and no culture.

Many people say that Dubai has set the benchmark that high for itself, Meet that benchmark, and your detractors will have to eat their words. Fail to meet it, and you can expect the brickbats to continue unabated.

What I personally think?

Dubai’s bubble is about to burst. This is akin to the Orchestra playing while the Titanic sank.

Well said Moey! I have never been to Dubai or stepped foot in the middle east for almost 17 years, but what I have being seeing about UAE is ridiculous. The amounts of money they spend, and people dying to go live there or perform there or whatever is all about the money, and nothing cultural or moral at all.

It’s already bursting. But since you’re not a resident here you wouldn’t know :-)

Dubai’s identity is that it doesn’t have one. Now imagine living in a city like this for as long as I did and you’d begin to understand why I am a lost soul. :)

I absolutely agree. It is totally obscene to spend that amount of money when so many people are suffering in the Middle East. Where is the money coming from to spend $1 billion to build a hotel then multi millions to open it. And those poor workers who built it, bet they did not get a bonus. So unreal, just like the CEO’s of the three automakers in the US each travelling on their own in corporate jets to Washington to plea for money to save their companies. A world gone mad! T

Man that was just awesome!!
Another fact, by the way, the fireworks were 7 times as big as the ones used in the Beijing Olympics… This is ridiculous!!!

But I don’t think that Dubai’s bubble is about to burst, I mean in today’s world, if you got money, you got it all, and what more do they have than money???

And the financial crisis you’re talking about… WHAT FINANCIAL CRISIS?? If Egypt, a country which isn’t half as rich as the UAE is, managed through it with no loss to the central bank… in fact, Egyptian tycoons are taking advantage of it, because they’re the ones that have enough liquid cash to strive, are taking advantage of it and they’re acquiring everything like crazy!

Talaat Mostafa one of Egypt’s richest, after staring to build a whole friggin city near Cairo, went on to actually building a whole new city in… guess… Riyadh!!!

And I think its kind of sad or frustrating, to see a country that didn’t virtually exist half a decade ago, make this huge fuss worldwide… Come on, its just a city, with a lot of towers!

Another comparison… Damac, Emaar, and Nakheel (the owner of the Palms in Dubai, those man-made ridiculously expensive islands) are all operating in Egypt, and they’re not building towers… I concluded why… WE GOT A LOT OF SPACE THEY DON’T HAVE… That’s why their buildings go high up… Damac, Emaar and Nakheel build resorts and huge ass compunds everywhere around Egypt… they don’t need the height if they have the space…

This was off topic… bottom line, I agree… Dubai is over-rated…

I don’t know much about the economy in the middle east but I have to say that the photo you posted is amazing!

Nizar added these pithy words on Nov 23 08 at 9:47 am

ok i agree at some point, but still all around the world there are people who spend alooooooooooot of money, on things that may not be necessary to most of us, and throw private parties, and travel and pay millions and just exaggerate in spending on so many things, and yet still alot of children die of hunger, this is issue is not very… new, but now we are very surprised maybe because we are not very accustomed to such things, enno we’ve always heard/read about such things in magazine and on the net, all around the world, but never in the middle east! :) fa 3adi…

I don’t think that it is fair to toss up hungry children over this. People around the globe have different interests and different agendas and different jobs. Sure we can all stop whereever we are and focuse on feeding the poor, but that is not how our world works. The exaggerated and stunning opening serves a purporse for the owners of the resort. They want and can promote it this way? It is there choice.

Dubai doesn’t have to suffer because the rest of the world does! If they manage to keep on going, then I cheer for them. It is sad to see people misrable in other places, but it is good also to see people have and enjoying themselves in some places as well.

The Observer added these pithy words on Nov 23 08 at 3:55 pm

The Observer i just wana tell u that it’s more than fair to toss up hungry children over this. if we dont think about them now when billions are spent on a damn resort that only a 100 millionaires are ever going to enter then when are we going to mention them?! plus from my point of view..promoting a resort or a hotel or whatever does not need fireworks that can be seen from space! what are they promoting it to aliens! i once was proud of dubai and the UAE in general for putting the middle east on the map…but not anymore!!
