Rant: Alcohol Prices

the Arabic at the bottom should have been زهقت I’m too lazy to edit it now.

It is not enough that I’m already in a bad phase raging out like a redneck down the street.

It was confirmed that the tax on alcohol is going to be increased to become 200% instead of 50%, so Let’s say a litre of Absolut Vodka is for 27 JD now at most of the stores tax inclusive, taking that 50% off, the real price of the bottle is 18 JD and the tax is 9, 9 by 3 is 27, so the new added tax is 27 JD instead of 9 JD, the final price of a litre bottle (not 1.5) is going to be 45 JD.

If my calculations are by any chance wrong, excuse me because I’m an art major student.

Well, just to let you know “smart” people behind this. I’d rather go to Syria or Lebanon in a shared-cab and get drunk there or go to Aqaba.

Advice: If you ever feel like having a nice lunch/dinner, Damascus and Beirut have tasty food, better and cheaper than 90% of Amman’s “restaurants”. You can go there in a shared-cab and pay 9 JD, get a bottle from the duty free, 1.5 litres for 10 JD, spend few hours in Damascus looking at how amazing the old architecture of the city is or do some shopping in Beirut and come back for another 9 JD, including the travel tax (another 12 JD) and will still be able to get the bigger size for 10 JD less and more fun of course with people that at least smile in your face.

Jordanians, Get ready to pay 10 JD for your locally made Amstel draft beer.

*worst case, Russian vodka is going to be around 20 a bottle after the prices going wako. still tastes good.

On a side note, this website helped me feel better, don’t ask how or why! Before and After Death is website containing a stunning series of portraits of people — shortly before and just after they die — touring Europe now, and tackling one of the biggest remaining taboos in Western societies. well, between food and alcohol ,, i guess most of the people will choose food.

Correction: The Customs tax was 150% and was raised to 200%. so it wont be that much of a difference

PS: the prices are still less than in Germany and most of the EU.

    w hala 3amee :)

Moey, not sure about your calculations =P Alcohol has a number of different taxes on it… sales tax, special tax, and customs. Now what has been increased is customs… which of course means that the price will go up drastically… but I guess local Amstel and local wine might benefit.

That said, I still agree with you that it’s becoming insanely expensive to go out and have some fun in Amman. It’s just easier for them to raise customs on alcohol because no one will dare protest and parliament wouldn’t debate such an issue.

Check your sources, Sweden is one of the most expensive if not the most when it comes to buying alcohol, and we pay less than half of your new price.

its amazing how things differ and vary between the street reactions in having taxes removed from meat and basic good and put on alcohol. and on the other side reactions on the blogosphere …

anyway, nizar, as i said, the jump wont be as moey mentioned for sure. it will be around 20-25% to the actual price. and i checked my sources very well. i know what i see with my eyes :P …haven’t been to Sweden through, so cant judge.

I have reduced my amount of alcohol intake since the last time prices went up!

Now I guess it is time to quit it all along (unless having a gift or a duty free bottle) because it is now really HARAM to buy a bottle of vodka in that price!

1 litre Absolut used to be 24JD and is now 35JD..

24JD was REALLY expensive for it in the first place, it’s sold for $15? at the duty free!

I still have 1 more year in Jordan, and it’s gonna cost me as much as the first 3 years altogether for alcohol :@

Normal people are in general have low enough salaries that they can’t afford any booze,or do not really have the habit of drinking ! and the Rich people, well, i bet they wont really care as they do not really buy things in normal shops, they get things imported therefore cheaper, better.
