Everyone can enjoy life, no matter what age, wealth, shape or size. And you only live once, smile. It’s free!
You can make your own fun, Stop saying Jordan is not fun. Amman might be an expensive city to live in but its enjoyable. You can gather your friends in your place, get a pirated DVD (not that I’m helping piracy but due to the fact that original DVDs end up for 30$ here) and enjoy a cheap good tasting pizza from Fantastic Pizza. Trust me, it’d not cost you a lot. I know, I also thought that Jordan would be more urbanized and advanced than the gulf (I.e. Kuwait where I’ve lived most of my life).
I also found myself complaining from not finding anything to do and feeling alienated to the people and the place collectively. I just gave it some time and I finally got used to it (yes, it took me 3 years to do so).
One of the activities I enjoy in Amman is bowling, I can never get bored of kicking others butts, ha-ha! Well, at least it’s sports. Those who tell you that Jordan is all about tourism and dining have got it all wrong. On the other side, there is an abundance of things to do if you look in the right places in the right times.
I find myself looking out for the bars, movie previews, exhibitions, and inspiring events that are held regularly in Jordan. Take the distant Heat festival for instance, he biggest rave/trance party in the middle east featuring famous DJs from UK, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt and more.. 2 days nonstop in Wadi Rum and Aqaba, with camping. For more info check www.distantheat.com
Now and after 3 years of living here, ironically, I find myself giving people advice on where to go, what to do in summer and how to manage, from passing by those excessively made-up women in malls, riding cabs not knowing what to expect from those mad, reckless drivers in cars driving you to the limits of insanity with their weirdness.
Yes, I have grown accustomed to the tough accent mixed with a bedouinish flavor and the slang words that come with it, the weird weather that attacks unexpectedly from nowhere causing you to switch off your a/c in the middle of the summer because it’s not hot.
Also the huge cars on the little tiny roads with different styles of car plates from all over the world, the huge amounts of coffee shops and restaurants recently opening in Shmaisani and Sweifieh that make you spoilt for choice and finally my beloved Jabal Amman area with a diversified crowd that come together to enjoy the country’s bazar JARA (Jabal Amman Residents Association).
After long thinking I would only be here for a couple of years, now, comfortably settled, I find myself planning my life here and I never thought I’d be saying this, but I can gladly say that I’m finally Jordanian.
