Time: 8.45am // Location: Amman Al-Ahliyeh University, Faculty of Arts, Class 601
Impressions:
A religious guy reading Quran and wearing a training suit, and a cap sitting next to a redhead-ed girl wearing a gypsy style skirt and too much accessories, the 2nd row.. 3 girls (not freshmen) I know from the last 3 courses, having fake hair extensions (it’s the trend in Jordan now) and saying hi to me (they usually do this when they want something…), 3 guys having green day’s vocalist as a motto (I like that, punk heads) and guys who seriously need to shower before going to university (I knew it because the hair on the backside of the neck is showing and it looks so disgusting) and also need to trim/have haircuts and use some technology called Deodorant. The rest of the class (originally 60-70 people) is not freshmen of course and they know what they’re doing. Art History is a course that presents the elements of Ancient and Classical Civilizations… Surprisingly this year we have 260+ graphic/interior design freshmen who know nothing about design… as usual (last year we were only 60 people so 260 something is a jump). The doctor started asking the every student a simple question (with 1-2 mins to give a simple answer) which is:

Why did you choose graphic/interior design as your major and why did you register for a subject that’s scheduled in the 2nd year not for freshmen?

Now, some of them were lost in 3rd space… and couldn’t find an answer while some others answered weird ones, I wrote some on my notebook, here you go:

  • Because my grades were low and I didn’t want to end up studying sharee’a
  • Because I like computer work and graphic is all about pc
  • Because my father owns an interior design shop and I need to run it after…
  • Because I think it’s cool
  • Because I love cartoon
  • Because I like ads and shop signs plus photography
  • I don’t know
  • Because It was the only open class
  • Because I registered late and found this class open
  • Because I love designs, architecture and always wondered what’s inside
  • I wanted to study something easy

Hahaha, the doctor and us (non-freshmen nor blondes, and I mean stupid airheads here not the hair color, just an expression) laughed our asses off. Some of them were really pathetic, the doctor started explaining out first to the girl with the low grades that didn’t end up with sharee’a: Habibti, we do not peal batata here… we do art, if you’re not an artist and can’t draw/paint we transfer you to another faculty for your good. and replied to the guy who thought graphic design is all computer work (I felt sorry for him): Habibi, graphic and interior design share the same subjects for the first 2-3 courses, you need to learn how to do everything manual first, you need to learn how to illustrate, paint, draw and also use the camera and to do graphic work manually, which is printing, modifying.. etc then you’ll take the computerized design which is Photoshop, Maya, Illustrator, 3DMax and AutoCAD. But until then, you’ll need to get satisfied with your sketch book or easily change your major. She also commented to the guy who thought it was easy: nothing is easy here, you learn/do your homework/attend classes then you’ll pass, you don’t then you’ll end up doing the subjects again and maybe getting kicked out.
Now, I might be cold hearted or a kid or whatever you’d like to call me, but I was really happy to see her doing that:

  • She’s enlightening them and giving them directions for their good
  • She’s giving them the opportunity to think or change their majors while it’s possible
  • She’s making their lives easier and our life miserable because we won’t have people to torture or make fun of
  • She’s making me feel good

My 2 gershes, Bash it on yallah!

It’s quite unfortunate that a lot of people go to university not knowing what they want and taking courses they “think” is easy.. it is easy if you like the subject.. not because you think it is easy and not scientific or engineering..

you should still make fun of them for their stupid replies and torture them for the rest of the term! :P

I thought that at Al Ahlieh, you study whatever you want as long as you pay (
gal move them to a different faculty gal).
ba3dain, hassa talwwen wa ma talween sar dirasseh?
I may agree that it needs some talent and is rather time consuming (coloring and stuff), but studying sharee3a will take 15 times more effort and STUDYING (not coloring) .

Ballahi:
no it’s not, not with our dean (fact: we’re the only ones with good graphic/interior design sections), JU doesn’t have graphic nor interior as a major, the main major is visual arts and design.
It needs talent and we do not just paint, we’re the media.. the nice ads you see, the nice packaging, it’s all our work, the couch you’re sitting on me.. is also our design, we do not just paint and draw. sharee3a is all memorizing and that’s not us, we also learn printing techniques, multimedia, english, Arabic/Latin Calligraphy, Decoration, Advertising & Marketing, Web-designing, Advanced Studies in Modern and islam art, Behavioral Studies, computer animation, Desktop Publishing, History of Art & Design, lnterior Construction, furniture design, landscaping, graphics and presentation, Textiles & Accessories, technical services, Restoration of Historic Monuments, Arabic-Islamic Style……… so on!
we’re not studying what you think?
we do not draw and paint for living..

Moey allow me to say, this is one of the very best that you’ve written so far! Don’t worry about what people say or think they know about you
Your impression and notes about why people join specific faculties is a true statement, many join something because they think they are going to learn about it … just by going to classes for it
For example, many people find that there is a lot of money to be made in the Computer industry so they jam their selves in computer related studies and end up inflating the market with more and more idiots

One day, people will understand that you only shine, when you do something you REALLY want to do …

Well done my friend … really, best post I’ve read for you

Moey, that ballahi guy is a prick, just ignore him.

Yeah it’s weird how a lot of people here just want the easy way out. I guess it’s the same case in my school, which explains why most students enrolled in Business school in Jordan end up failing.

It’s a shame that Jordanians get caught up in what they want to achieve, simply due to our culture. People who don’t want to study, nor have the capacity for it, end up going to college, by force, so that they will have a certificate, and khalas, it ends there. That’s their goal in life. Rather than finding what they truly want. Maybe it is the reason behind our identity crisis, we think we know it all, but honestly, we have no clue.
